Miyata One Ten

I scored this new ride for $40. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. Probably keep it in original cruising condition for awhile.

So....Here is the fork I am possibly getting. It retails for about $360 but I spotted one for sale on MMBA for $200. I am all about hooking the single speed up as a rigid. However, is this the way to go? I have never boughten a used item before and don't know whether it is the safest thing to do, espcecially seeing how it is a carbon component. I have emailed the guy several times and he is totally ligit. I even checked out his race page. The guy is 52 years old and owns 4 Bianchi bikes. So I'm guessing he takes really good care of his stuff. It doesn't have any scratches or dents. All I have to do is try to talk him into paying the shipping. Any thoughts on this Mr. Craig's List?

Converting Headshok to 1 1/8" rigid fork.

Jer,

Here's a reducer that will allow you to use the original headset. Someone on a forum said a new headset is a better idea though.

You're getting this headset right? Here's another one.

You'll need a stem that's 1 1/8" instead of 1 1/2" too right?

Have you read anything about a suspension corrected fork? I suppose it's longer to make up for the fact that you no longer have suspension. Not sure.

7 speed GT and Gold Cup Single Speed

I think I need a different shifter for this machine. The barrel adjuster is broken. What kind of shifters do you have from the Cannondale? I'll buy those from you. Then I could put a 9 speed cassette on it and it would actually shift right. I should probably tilt the seat up a bit too.

The Gold Cup is for cruising only. It's a bit heavy - probably 28-30 lbs.

Why GRian's Don't Ride Bikes

While on my 21 mile one way trip to work today, I started to realize why Grand Rapids citizens do not commute by way of bike.

1. Most Michiganders are slightly overweight to obese.

2. Most Michiganders live 10-15 miles from their place of work.

3. Michigan lawmakers have not begun to think about the importance of bike lanes within city limits.

4. Michiganders have one of the highest dispensible incomes in the country. In other words, they can throw their money away on gas.

5. Public Transportation (the rapid) does not have enough bicycle racks for bicyclists.

As someone who loves the thrill of pedaling both on roads and trails in Michigan, it frustrates me to hear how "Green" our state is. We have received several awards for Leed Certified buildings, including the first every "Green" art museum, but city officials fail to realize one of the easiest ways to make our city healthier: bike lanes. One only has to travel through the city in a car to realize how dangerous it is for a person to commute to work on a bike. Not only are the pot holes comparible to those of a third world country, but there is no room for riders to pedal on the shoulder. The only township within GR that has bike lanes is East Grand Rapids, which lasts for approximately two miles.

When are we going to realize as a city, state and country that one way to become less dependent on oil is to simply make bicycling a priority? When are we going to realize that an average tank of gas costs $50.00? When are we going to realize that one way to combat the problem of obesity is to allow people to exercise to and from work? When are we going to realize that bulding "Green" is not the only way to make a city more enviornmentaly sound? When are we going to realize that Grand Rapids has hundreds of riders begging to get on their bike to help save our planet in one simple way?
